MaconIt is a non-profit organization that serves to provide social and financial support to college students from Macon, Ga. Every day we work to create opportunities for our students to feel supported through college and beyond. As a student-centered organization, the recent COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on our members. Most students have been displaced from their college campuses, which has led them to return home to Macon to finish online instruction. We believe closing campuses and enforcing social distancing is the best way to maintain educational instruction while ensuring the safety of our students. However, we would be remiss if we did not acknowledge the emotional toll it has taken on the college students from Macon, Ga and all over the nation.
College provides students with the opportunity to engage in multicultural conversations, learn from well-studied and experienced professionals, live and learn with a diverse group of peers, and gain knowledge/skills that will help them navigate life. MaconIt promotes college education because our founders, board and members understand its value in the classroom and beyond. On most college campuses, students have access to dining halls, which ensures they are provided with daily meals. They have access to support services such as on campus health clinics, counseling, accessibility centers, wellness centers, tutoring services, writing centers, etc. Students also benefit from a plethora of extracurricular activities that help further their personal and professional development such as sports games, workshops, job and organization fairs, Student Council races, and step shows. Students have been dismissed from their jobs on-campus, internships have been terminated, and study abroad trips and graduations have been canceled. Our students have had to quickly join the rest of the world in temporarily forgetting life as we knew it, but with the added burden of leaving close friends without a formal goodbye, moving out of their residence halls, deciding what to do with their belongings, determining where they should live for the next few months, figuring out how they will eat, earn money, apply for post grad opportunities and finish the rest of the academic semester successfully.
It is no secret that life is indeed unpredictable; and during this time we are all reminded of its complexity, but it is our hope that as a community we will not let the fear of COVID-19 prevent us from using our resources, skills, talent and power to do all that we can to serve our friends and family now.
MaconIt plans to continue to work for our students. During this time, we have plans to engage our students and the community virtually via our Instagram live, and provide financial support where we can. We are still planning for our conference that will take place on July 18th and our annual MaconIt Ceremony on July 19th. We have decided to dedicate a segment of our ceremony to formally honor all of Macon’s 2020 college graduates. Below is a short list of activities and offers our team has secured for the upcoming weeks:
• College discounts from Carrabba’s, Tropical Smoothie and another local restaurant TBA
• Guided exercise classes and Yoga
• Virtual concert featuring R&B, Rap and Spoken Word Artist from Macon, Ga
• Virtual Trivia
We plan to continue to have weekly activities and workshops that provide our students with the support they deserve, using social distancing as an opportunity to be creative. This is a uniquely difficult time for our students and their families, and we feel it is our responsibility as a community and organization to help them through it.
We appreciate every person, family, business and organization that has supported our efforts thus far by either contributing your time or energy to serving our students.
